Portrait Lüdenscheid - Stadt des Lichts
A modern, industrial town which nature smiles upon
Lüdenscheid is a modern economic and service centre, and at the same time it is the social and cultural heart of the Märkischer Kreis. Good infrastructure and its ideal setting in the magnificent Mittelgebirge landscape guarantee a wide range of opportunities to the 80,000 inhabitants as well as to visitors.
Lüdenscheid is the "Stadt des Lichts" - the so called town of light. Numerous buildings, paths and spaces are permanently bathes in light, creating an inviting atmosphere which provide orientation and a feeling of safety, prompting the making of experiences in the town, even after dark.
During the "
Light Routes", international light artists and designers turn the town centre into a platform of light every two years.
Lüdenscheid is an attractive place to go shopping , as typified by the impressive pedestrian precinct. Department stores, the modern Stern-Center, specialist shops and boutiques constantly delight shoppers with the very latest products.
The historic and carefully-restored old part of the town, with its romantic facades and cosy pubs and restaurants, attracts visitors from near and far. The Schillerbad brewery and pub, built in a former town swimming pool, is a meeting place for young and old.
The beautiful landscape, the Neuenhof castle - surrounded by water - and, not least, the wide range of leisure time activities on offer, add to the attraction of Lüdenscheid. Numerous sports and leisure centres, the
sauna village on an area of more than 12,000 m², the
family pool Nattenberg, tennis courts, indoor riding arena with showground and a golf course just outside the town offer plenty of opportunities for sporting activities.
The Versetalsperre reservoir lies south of the town. The traffic-free paths - of which there are also many on the outskirts of the town - provide plenty of opportunities for extended and refreshing walks. Ideal for filling your lungs with oxygen. The Fuelbecker, Fürwigge and Jubach dams as well as the area around the Homert lookout tower (539 metres above sea-level) and the nearby Ebbegebirge range of hills are delightful destinations for outings, both in summer and winter.
There is certainly plenty of cultural life. In the generously equipped town museum with the collection of the town gallery, the visitor is given a comprehensive impression of the historical, cultural and economic development of the town and its surroundings.
Unique special displays of buttons, coins and maps on the one hand, and exemplary exhibits of German post-war art on the other hand, provide an impression of living historical and artistic variety.
The "Phänomenta", a scientific experience centre which is unique to North-Rhine Westphalia, invites its visitors to experiment, including hands-on.
The technical cultural monument and the
Bremecker Hammer smithy museum complete the picture.
A professional theatrical and music programme is provided in Lüdenscheid's Kulturhaus, which is also an ideal venue for conferences.
Lüdenscheid's economic structure is dominated by the Mittelstand (medium-sized) processing industries. The major sectors are electrical technology, iron, sheet metal and metal processing, mechanical engineering and plastics processing. Trade and the service industries provide work for around 30% of employees.
Lüdenscheid is the seat of the district administration department and a branch office of the South-Westphalia Chamber of Trade and Commerce. As far as university education is concerned, in Lüdenscheid there is the study centre of the Hagen "Open University", the Institute for Biography and History ("Das Deutsche Gedächtnis" - The German memory) and the institutes for plastics technology, applied lighting technology and metal-forming technology. The "Entwicklungs- und Gründerzentrum", which helps people to set up and develop companies, concentrates on promoting technology, practice-related research transfer, and provides sponsorship for young companies.
