However, Lüdenscheid has long been more than just an industrial site. Almost one-tenth of employees are involved in health care. Thanks to their specialist skills, the main hospital - Klinikum Lüdenscheid - and the hospital for sports injuries - Krankenhaus für Sportverletzte Hellersen - enjoy a reputation far outside the region. Lüdenscheid's town centre, with its modern shopping centre and five large department stores, is the centre of the region's retail trade. The town has an efficient banking sector, and, as the seat of the district administration and other public authorities, is the administrative centre.
